IN VARNA

Everything you actually need to know about parking in Varna — the Blue Zone, how to pay, where it's free, and how not to get towed.

The Blue Zone — the basics

Varna's paid street parking is called the Blue Zone. It covers most of the city centre and the streets above the Sea Garden. Unlike some Bulgarian cities, Varna's Blue Zone runs every day, Monday to Sunday, 09:00–20:00 (excluding official holidays). Outside those hours, street parking is free.

One quirk worth knowing: in Varna the paid areas are not always painted with blue lines on the asphalt. Look for the parking signs and meters instead — they're your real indicator.

How to pay — three ways

1. SMS (needs a Bulgarian SIM). Send your licence plate number to 1352. Write the plate exactly as it appears — the system accepts Cyrillic or Latin, up to 10 characters. One SMS buys one hour at about €0.51 plus the cost of the SMS. You'll get a confirmation message, and a warning about 5 minutes before your time runs out. Send another SMS before it expires to extend by an hour.

2. The mobile app. Download the parking app, register, and top up a virtual wallet. The app is the only way to buy a full-day ticket — which, honestly, is the stress-free option if you're at the beach all day. It also lets you save multiple plates.

3. Cash at a point of sale. Shops and kiosks marked with the parking sticker sell parking. Useful if you don't have a Bulgarian phone number.

The 3-hour limit. The Blue Zone maxes out at 3 hours per session via SMS. After that the system stops accepting payments for your plate, and you must move the car. A new 3-hour period can only start 30 minutes after the last one ends. If you need a full day, use the app.

Where you can park for free

  • Anywhere in the Blue Zone after 20:00 and before 09:00 — free, all night.
  • Third Buna Beach (Треta Буна) — there's a spacious free lot right next to the sand. It's a genuine lifesaver in summer, but it fills up fast — aim to arrive before 10:00 on peak-season weekends.
  • Outside the central zone — residential streets beyond the Blue Zone boundary are generally free. A 10-minute walk can save you the whole day's parking.

Guarded and municipal car parks

If you'd rather not think about it, Varna has municipal car parks and private guarded lots — typically around €1/hour. There are lots near the Sea Garden entrance, opposite the Sports Hall, at the Marine Station (Morska Gara), behind the Festival Complex, and in the Chaika neighbourhood. Cars are not allowed inside the Sea Garden itself, so you'll park at one of its edges and walk in.

Do not park here. Avoid kerbs marked with yellow lines and the words «СЛУЖЕБЕН АБОНАМЕНТ» (reserved/official subscription) — that's someone's paid private space. Also never block a driveway or narrow the road. Varna tows and wheel-clamps enthusiastically, especially in high season, and retrieving a towed car will eat several hours of your holiday.

At the resorts

Golden Sands, St. Constantine and Elena, and the other resorts have their own paid zones plus private guarded lots. Use the big lots near the main entrances rather than nosing into the narrow inner alleys — it's faster and far less stressful.

Our honest advice: if you're spending the day at the beach or in the centre, just buy the full-day option in the app. It costs less than one towing fee and you'll stop watching the clock.
